Red Fire Farm is a 50 acre farm located in southern Hampshire County on Taylor and Carver Streets in Granby, Massachusetts.
Fields of flat vegetable
soils and upland pasture surrounding a substantial beaver pond make the
farm as picturesque as it is productive.
In
2001, Ryan Voiland purchased the property from the Hatch/Lyman family.
The circumstances of the sale and purchase of this farm represent an important
achievement for farmland preservation. The State of Massachusetts, as
part of the sale agreement, purchased the development rights for the farmland,
assuring that the property will forever be used as farmland, and thus
making it affordable for a young farmer to own and farm on this land.
Historically a dairy farm, Ryan is now using the fields and barns for growing vegetables, fruits, plants and flowers.
In 1922, the original house and barn had been destroyed by fire, and the name "Red Fire Farm" was chosen to remember that event. 'New Red Fire' is also the name of Ryan's favorite red leaf lettuce variety.
The existing barn and house were rebuilt on the original foundations
in 1922.
In 2008 Red Fire Farm is growing thirty acres of organic produce
for many different markets including at the Springfield Farmers Market,
local wholesale accounts, and farm stands in Montague and Granby in addition
to the CSA.
We expect to harvest produce for 600 CSA members in 2008,
which represents about 60% of our total harvest. That’s a lot of local
veggies!
