Red Fire Farm is looking for a Greenhouse Manager to help oversee all aspects of our greenhouse system at our Montague farm to raise beautiful healthy plants for our fields and bedding plant garden sales. The ideal candidate has experience working on a diverse, vegetable farm and is committed to growing local organic food. This person will be working closely with our other management staff, as well as leading the greenhouse crews and doing hands-on work within our 20,000 square feet of protected growing areas and outdoor caterpillars. They must be able to work well both independently and collaboratively. We need someone who is organized, hardworking, and thinks creatively to solve problems and improve systems.

As the Greenhouse Manager, your duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manage details and complex planting plans to achieve weekly planting and potting up goals across field and wholesale/retail plants
  • Schedule, manage and inspire greenhouse staff to be efficient and effective
  • Manage wholesale relationships with plant customers and develop new plant sales customers
  • Coordinate wholesale plant order processing
  • Help prepare plants for delivery for retail, wholesale, and farm fields
  • Coordinate with field transplant teams for plant needs during the season
  • Help the farm owners generate the yearly bedding plant growing plan, oversee the seeding and care of plants for bedding plant enterprise, and gather feedback from retail outlets
  • Organize overall greenhouse spaces
  • Ensure proper watering and venting of growing spaces
  • Coordinate maintenance of facilities and supplies
  • Help hire greenhouse assistants, and supervise that staff as well as other farm crew helping during the greenhouse production season. 

 

Requirements

  • Applicants MUST have a valid driver’s license to be considered for the position
  • A desire and willingness to work outside (in the rain and the heat & cold too!)
  • Comfortable with computers, email and Excel
  • Must be able to lift 30-50 lbs repeatedly and easily, and work physically all day
  • Must work well in teams
  • Must have a good attitude and be willing to learn
  • Bilingual English-Spanish candidates encouraged to apply!

Schedule & Hours

Work hours are Monday-Friday 7 am – 6 pm during peak season with some weekend hours. This position starts with full time hours in the Greenhouse in February and will be very busy until mid-July. Getting started earlier than February is possible for training if you have part time availability. When the hours start cutting back in the greenhouse in later July, you can choose to have a lighter schedule for the rest of the Summer and Fall with greenhouse work or can pick up hours as a tractor operator or in another position on the farm.

Job Type: Year round, variable hours, see schedule details above: fewer during the winter months (December thru February)

Pay: Compensation based on experience. Position includes paid time off and paid sick time.
