Greenhouse and Flower Leader in Training

 

We are seeking an individual with leadership skills, a great farm work ethic, and strengths in customer service and communication to teams. This position will help lead tasks and teams in greenhouse plant growing, flower growing and bouquet making. We can train the right individual, but the more experience you bring with flower farming and plant growing the better. This position can develop into more leadership after a year of training with current farm managers.

 

In this job, you will help grow about 100 acres worth of organic food, and make thousands of bouquets of organic flowers to share with our community. Our farm crew is very diverse, just like our crops, and we are seeking people who enjoy diversity and actively build community.

 

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate tasks with greenhouse crew for seeding, potting up, planting, hoeing, training tomatoes, and other plant care over the season
  • Train and work with crews
  • Order materials, and make sure they are organized and stocked 
  • Assist to arrange flower transplanting plans, field preparation, and cultivation with production team
  • Care for flower fields for optimal harvestable blooms, maintenance of fields 
  • Harvest flowers and prepare bouquets for scheduled deliveries
  • Maintain greenhouse spaces and flower arranging area in organized and clean state 
  • Work with farms, stores, and special events customers for special orders 
  • Assist in making schedules for staff
  • Plan and communicate with farmers’ market staff, management, marketing, and the wholesale team to make the most of plant and flower sales in each of our market areas 
  • Assist in sales tracking, marketing and increase plant and flower sales over the season
  • Assist in developing planting plans in the winter

 

Skills

  • Excellent organizational skills and self motivation
  • Good work ethic, and fast paced to lead by example
  • Ability to coordinate a small team (1-5 people) and train new tasks
  • Knowledge of vegetable plant and flower varieties, growing needs, and harvest and packing techniques
  • Sense of design and color for arranging 
  • Open to feedback, and able to give constructive feedback to the team
  • Skills with communication in a bigger team and developing systems
  • Good written and verbal communication with customers 
  • Comfort with physical work and ability to lift 20-50 lbs repeatedly is necessary for the job
  • Ability to work outdoors in rain, heat, cold is necessary
  • English language reading and writing necessary, Spanish language skills a plus

 

Schedule: This position is full time February to October and part time from November to January. During those cold months where we aren’t growing much you could arrange to work under a different department to get additional hours. Greenhouse care during the season requires a rotation of weekend days to open and close greenhouses and care for plants, 2 weekend days a month or as planned with crew.
