Brussels Sprouts
The Basics
Brussels sprouts are a very finicky crop to grow, and the variety you choose to grow makes a big difference towards having any sprouts at all. They like a long season, and are often affected by foliar diseases and some pests that organic methods don’t have control over. Sometimes the plants look a bit rough-and-tumble by the time they are harvested, but simply peeling off the outer leaves will do the trick.
Cooking Tips
For storage in your fridge, cut or pick the sprouts off the stalk and store in a plastic bag. You can remove the outer leaves if the sprouts have any damage. Take care not to overcook them (boil or steam 5-10 minutes max); mushy is not what you want.
Roasting them in the oven with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper is a winning recipe! Former Brussels sprouts-haters will be begging for seconds.
